Buying a dress online is a gamble: fit, fabric, and color can all disappoint in person. That's why return policy matters as much as price. But "free returns" has quietly become rarer — several popular dress retailers now deduct return-label fees from your refund.

We run Epicplacess, an online women's fashion boutique, so to be upfront: this guide includes competitors, and we're honest below about where our own return policy stands (spoiler: ours is not fully free). Policies change often, so always confirm on the retailer's policy page before ordering. Here's the landscape as of October 2026.

Quick comparison

Store Return window Free return shipping?

Target 90 days (longer for Target-owned brands) Yes — free in store and by mail

Revolve Generous window for unworn items Yes — free US returns
Dillard's / department stores Varies Often in-store only — check first

1. Zappos — the gold standard

Zappos offers 365-day returns with free shipping both ways, no questions asked. The dress selection skews mainstream brands rather than trend-driven boutique styles, but if risk-free trying is your top priority, nobody beats a full year to decide.

2. Nordstrom — flexible and fee-free

Nordstrom has no rigid return window; returns are handled case-by-case, and mail or in-store returns are free. Combined with a deep dress inventory from budget-friendly BP. to designer labels, this is why Nordstrom tops so many "where to buy dresses" lists.

3. Target — easy and local

Target gives you 90 days, free, in store or by mail — and up to a year on Target-owned labels like A New Day and Wild Fable. Dress prices mostly sit under $50, making it one of the lowest-risk places to try casual styles.

4. Macy's — free mail returns

Macy's accepts most returns within 30 days with free return shipping, or free in-store drop-off. Strong for occasion and cocktail dresses across a wide price range.

5. Amazon — free on most fashion

Most clothing sold by Amazon ships back free within 30 days, often with label-free drop-off at Whole Foods, Kohl's, or UPS. Watch out: third-party marketplace sellers set their own policies, so check the "Returns" line on each listing.

6. Revolve — free returns on trend-forward dresses

Revolve is pricier, but US customers get free returns on unworn items with tags attached — rare among trend-driven dress retailers, and a big reason it dominates the event-dress category.

Stores where returns are no longer free

Honesty cuts both ways, so here's what surprised us while researching: several beloved dress retailers now charge. Lulus deducts a return-label fee (around $5.95) and has tightened its window to roughly three weeks unless you take store credit. Free People charges a mail-return fee as well. ASOS and several fast-fashion sites have also added fees or shortened windows for some customers. None of this makes them bad stores — Lulus remains one of the best cocktail-dress sources anywhere — but "free returns" claims from memory are outdated; check before checkout.

Where Epicplacess stands (full disclosure: that's us)

Our own policy: 30 days, eligible US returns can get a prepaid label, but a flat $6 restocking fee is deducted on non-defective returns — so we don't belong on the fully-free list above, and we'd rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. Defective, damaged, or wrong-item returns are always free. If you want to browse anyway, our dress collection focuses on trendy, affordable going-out and vacation styles, and the full policy is on our refund policy page.

FAQ

Which online store has the best return policy for dresses?

Zappos (365 days, free both ways) and Nordstrom (no firm window, free returns) are the most generous mainstream options in 2026.

Do any boutique dress stores offer free returns?

Revolve offers free US returns. Most smaller boutiques — ours included — charge a small fee or deduct label costs, because return shipping is a major cost for small retailers.

How do I avoid return fees entirely?

Buy from retailers with free in-store returns (Target, Macy's, Nordstrom), choose store credit where it waives the fee, and double-check size charts and reviews before ordering.
